Road Trip to Mukteshwar

As from the last story in Nainital, We were planning to cover other offbeat nearby villages in Nainital. Today there were three of us, my cousin joined me the next day. Then on breakfast, our hotel owner decided to gave us an offer that we couldn’t refuse. He told that we rent his car at a very nominal price to Mukteshwar. So off we went on a road trip to Mukteshwar.

Mukteshwar is a small town made famous by Jim Corbett who penned the novel “The Man-Eaters of Kumaon”. Mukteshwar is a tiny hamlet and is best seen on foot. On the road trip, however, we planned to stop at all the important location we could find alongside the road.

Our first stop was Golu Devta Temple. Lord Golu is the legendary God of the Kumaun and is worshipped a deity. The devotees make petitions at the temple, using stamp papers. On accomplishment of their wish, the deity is shown gratitude by hanging bells. Seeing uncountable bells in the temple, I came to the conclusion that probably all the petitions were granted by the lord.

Next Stop was Tea Garden. At a ticket of 20 INR, we visited the lush green Tea Gardens. Apart from that, there is not much here, but it is very serene and worth a visit.

Next up on a hairpin bend, we came across this beautiful panorama of the Himalayas, that we parked the car on the side. The views from this place are enchanting. The vivid description of this view of the Himalayas is justified only by bare eyes. I noted down the OYO Hotel that was facing the Mountains. Our last place was Mata’s Temple and Chauli ki Jali. Chauli ki Jali is a cliff that has mythological relevance. Amazing views of the valley can be seen from here.
