Backpacking Europe: Versailles
Versailles is a sparse town on the outskirts of Paris. It is well known as it was the principal residence of the Kings of France from Louis XIV until the beginning of the French Revolution.
This was my second trip to Paris and on my previous trip, I had already visited almost all the places except Versailles as it would have taken a whole day. Getting to Versailles from Paris is easy. Take the RER C and get off at Versailles Rive Gauche. Then follow the massive crowds to the chateau.
There is not much to explore than the Palace of Versailles.
The palace is a French Historic Monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, notable especially for the Ceremonial Hall of Mirrors, the Opera theatre, and royal apartments and the most prominent vast Gardens of Versailles (2000+ acres!) with fountains, canals, and geometric flower beds and groves.
